Located in the Bible Belt of The South, Athens Georgia has a place of worship to suit everyone! Compass Church on Highway 29 (near Athens Techincal College) in Athens is a lively enviroment, welcomes those who are searching for a personal relationship with God, and gives back to the community (they recently helped to re-build a home destroyed by fire). Their website is packed with great information for all ages and interest!
Church of The Nations on Highway 441 on White Oak Drive near Watkinsville & the Athens By-pass defines "Nations . . . not just as geographical countries, but as groups of people with common goals, common needs and common interests".
First Presbyterian Church of Athens on east Hancock Avenue in Athens considers it's mission to "to create a community where people seek the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, rejoice in worship, and go forth sharing the love of Christ to Athens and the world".
Milledge Avenue Baptist Church in the heart of Five Points has activites for everyone, check out their online calendar.
Tuckston United Methodist Church on Lexington Road in East Athens was started in 1889 as a Sunday School! The history of this church and its involvement in the Athens community is a blessing to read. "From four different worship services, to Sunday School, to special bible studies and Christian renewal classes, Tuckston offers a diverse range of faith enrichment options for children, youth and adults."
St. Philothea Greek Orthodox Church has a new house of worship on Mars Hill Road in Watkinsville Georgia.
Our Hope MCC holds services at the University of Georgia Presbyterian Student Center and "plays a vital role in addressing the spiritual needs of all people, but especially the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and "straight-but-not-narrow" community".
St. Joseph Catholic Church on Prince Avenue in Athens was founded in when "In 1873, Bishop William H. Gross of Savannah, accompanied by Father James O'Brien of Washington, Georgia came to Athens to search for a location for a boy's orphanage. They were not successful, and eventually the orphanage was established in Washington. During their visit, however, they were approached by ten Catholic men of Athens and asked to purchase a site for a church." The full history, including the acquisition of St. Marys Hospital in lovingly detailed on their website and is a very interesting documentation of history.
Congregation Children of Israel (URJ) located on Dudley Drive in Athens, "Since its beginnings in 1872, the Congregation Children of Israel has been the only synagogue in Athens. As current rabbi, Rabbi Ronald D. Gerson is fond of saying, "It's very important for people to know we are the center of Jewish life in all of Northeast Georgia."
I have one more special mention: Pastor Billy's Cuban Restaurant at 445 Athens Street in Jefferson, Georgia. Pastor Billy has a Bible study on Sunday at 5:30 in the restaraunt. His restaurant is refreshing with favorite verses and inspirational quotes on the walls, Christian Music playing in the background, Bibles on the tables and an atmosphere of service, not to mention great smelling food.
